We don’t think about it much, but our putter is the hardest working club in our bag. It hits the most shots, and in the end is cast as either hero or villain in any given round. It’s either our best friend, or, if it misbehaves is banished to a dark closet, sometimes for months or even years. Of course, with a Frankly Frog putter no dark closet is ever required.
We expect a lot of our putter. All short putts must fall and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t sink the longer ones too. The real issue, often overlooked, is the fact that our mind tries to control the stroke, not allowing the putter and our body to do what they would do naturally.
On the putting green, the value of one stroke is demonstrably evident and can be a matter of inches. Good putting can make up for lackluster play in other areas of the game. Bad putting can destroy an otherwise stunning round of straight drives and pinpoint accurate irons.
So, as you sit with family and friends this Thanksgiving, remember to thank your putter. Whether you made putts or missed them, you did it together. For this appreciative thought, next time you play, your putter might just thank you back.
